Derbylife Writing Contest: “’Anya Who?’ – The trials and tribulations of a transfer skater” by Anya Marx
“That new girl?” “The one from Vegas?” “Wait, who?”
I am a transfer skater.
For me, the past year has been spent being sore, sweaty and challenged by the Fabulous Sin City Rollergirls. I was groomed, coddled and yelled at along with a group of 15 other girls who became my best friends.
We shamelessly stared at the vets together.
Passed skills together.
Nursed our first injuries together.
I had a derby family; wife and all.
I made the travel team and these bonds intensified.
We shared beds. Food. Secrets. Goals.
There were (some) fights and there was (a lot of) love.
Then I moved and derby changed. Everything was new.
More importantly, everything was different.
The terminology. The drills. The people.
I felt like a stranger to the sport and I missed my league.
This story doesn’t have a happy ending… yet. It’s been about a month and I am still struggling to find my place on this new league. I’m still learning names and I’m still not sure what the difference is between a B2 and a B3. I’m not on a team yet and I never know where to sit. I still fight the urge to chime in with “Well, on my old league…” but every practice gets easier.
I will never stop missing my old league, but maybe I’m the lucky one. I get to form brand new bonds with brand new people. I get to learn new skills and skate against new teams. At the end of the day, I am proud to say that I am an Orlando Psycho City Derby Girl.
