Meet Team USA: Frida Beater
Name: Frida Beater
League Affiliation: Rocky Mountain Rollergirls
Years Skating: 5 years playing roller derby. 27 years skating.
DL: What was your previous athletic background, if any?
FB: I was a jock my whole life. Before high school, I speed skated on both quads and inlines. In high school, I was All-State track, and I played soccer and basketball. In college, I played rugby.
DL: Why did you want to be on Team USA?
FB: I wanted play with the best skaters in the country and represent all of the roller derby skaters in the US. What an incredible honor.
DL: How did you feel when you found out you had made it?
FB: Shocked and elated. I won’t lie, I may have gotten a little teary-eyed. I was at work, so I couldn’t listen to the podcast. I got a text from Assaultin’ Pepa that said: “I KNEW IT! I want to be the first to congratulate you.” I was driving when I got the text and I almost drove right off the road.
DL: Which skater inspires you most, and why?
FB: Tannibal. Not only is she an amazing player, but she goes out, does her job on the track, and never runs her mouth about it. She lets her skating talk for her.
DL: Do you have any advice for skaters just starting out?
FB: Go to practice: hard work is the only way you are going to get better. Be humble: never think you’re better than anyone else. Take personal responsibility for your own progress: you can improve with others’ help, but ultimately, you are the captain of your own ship and you decide where that ship will go.
