Vintage Have Derby, Will Travel: Bout Recap: London Rollergirls’ First Blood
Editor’s Note: Have Derby, Will Travel was Hurt Reynolds’ original derby blog as he travelled across the U. S. and Canada for a year (2006-2007) volunteering for derby leagues and events at a time when derby was spreading like wildfire. In honor Of London Rollergirls’ first trip to WFTDA Eastern Regionals, here’s a look back at their first bout from 2007.

I usually constrain this site’s posts only to coverage of interleague bouts, but I’m going to stray from that to repost Kitty DeCapitate’s recap from the London Rollergirls’ September 8th debut bout, “The Great Rock ‘n’ Rollerderby Swindle” (originally submitted on roller_girls). I’m making this exception because I find the prospect of international roller derby extremely exciting, and I know I’m not alone!
The UK brings the roster of nations with actively bouting leagues to six. In addition to the US and Canada, this year has seen debut bouts from leagues in Australia, New Zealand, and Germany. Leagues have also formed in Ireland and Sweden. This international spread is exciting to a lot of derby folks for the same reason that the sports’ rapid growth in the US has been — it’s amazing to find out that the appeal is more than local, not just of the sport, but of the irreverent attitudes, the fashion sense, and the showmanship, juxtaposed directly against sincere and serious physical competition.
In short: Holy crap, we’re everywhere.
Next month brings Europe’s first interleague bout, as the Birmingham Blitz Derby Dames host the London Rockin’ Rollers on October 27th. I hope someone in attendance will give us the lowdown on all the action there, too!
Read on for Kitty’s recap of the first LRG bout.
“Hey Everyone in Derby World! It’s Kitty DeCapitate from the London Roller Girls!!! We had the UK’s First Ever Women’s Flat-Track Expo Bout yesterday…..to a SELL OUT CROWD of 400!!! With our special guest skaters from Detroit Pist-Offs, Bikini Killer (who had spent 3 months skating with us, and doing so much for our League) and Miss.Tsunami and Dolly Bust-Her from Stuttgart Valley Roller Girls, it was fast, it was furious, with plenty of spills and awesome take-outs!!
Both Teams got off to a pretty even start, with Team Pink leading for a time in the first half, but Team Black came back and at half time the scores were 56-39. Team Pink came out hard in the second half, but only managed to keep the difference from getting much wider, with the final scores at Team Black 100 and Team Pink 77.
A big thank-you to everyone involved, and to all the support from the wider Derby Community. We had skaters down from scotland, birmingham and the brand new league in bedford, so the derby love is spreading like wildfire, and LRG look forward to our next Bout!!!
Well done to Team Black!”
