Meet Team USA: Shenita Stretcher
Philly Roller Girls
I have been playing derby for five years but I grew up in my local roller rink.
DL: What was your previous athletic background, if any?
SS: I played softball and basketball when I was in grade school but that was about it. I don’t have much of an athletic background but I have always been competitive.
DL: Why did you want to be on Team USA?
SS: I tried out for Team USA because I knew this was the next step for derby. The growth of our sport gives me goosebumps and I needed to be involved in making history.
DL: How did you feel when you found out you had made it?
SS: Words can not even begin to explain. I felt accomplished as a skater and proud to be representing my country alongside these amazing women. I don’t think the smile has left me face since.
DL: Which skater inspires you most, and why?
SS: Wow! Where do I start? I wish I could go on and on about why each one of the skaters on the USA roster is inspiring. If I had to pick a skater off the USA roster I would say Jukeboxx or Fisti Cuffs. Their intensity and aggression are impressive.
DL: Do you have any advice for skaters just starting out?
SS: I’ve learned so much from my leaguemates and the amazing skaters I meet across the country. My advice is to learn from each other and be open to criticism, which will only help you grow as an athlete. There is no cap to the ways of improving your game. Whether it’s by improving your conditioning, mental game, or branching out to learn different types of cross training, derby has NO LIMITS!
