Meet Team USA: Atomatrix
I’ve been competing on quad and inline skates for 22 years
DL: What was your previous athletic background, if any?
A: Quad Speed National Champion in 1994. Went on to collect 17 World Titles in Inline Speed Skating. Retired from the World level in 2004. Started skating derby in late 2008
DL: Why did you want to be on Team USA?
A: This is history in the making! The World Cup Team represents one of derby’s highest honors and a chance to represent our country.
DL: How did you feel when you found out you had made it?
A: Very proud of how far I’ve come in roller derby. When I started I was recognized only as “a former speed skater.”
DL: Which skater inspires you most, and why?
A: Deanna Parker, a former US World Team member and who I looked up to at 10 years old. She inspired me to be a world champion. Tannibal Lector, on and off the track she’s a wealth of knowledge in all things skating! She has also overcome many obstacles to accomplish what she has today in inline speed, world-level hockey, and now roller derby.
DL: Do you have any advice for skaters just starting out?
A: You may not want to hear this. Work on conditioning/strength and technique to build a strong foundation and be less prone to injuries, leading to a longer career.
